ABOUT
The Vaalharts Water User Association was established by proclamation no. 421 in the Government Gazette no. 22281 dated 18 May 2001 in order to take over the operation and maintenance of the Vaalharts Government Water Scheme on behalf of the Department of Water Affairs. The Minister of Water Affairs approved the constitution of the Water User Association and certain powers and duties in terms of the National Water Act was delegated to the Vaalharts Water User Association and is captured in the Operation & Maintenance Agreement.

The Vaalharts Irrigation Scheme covers more than 39 000 ha of land under irrigation, consists of more than 1000 km of concrete lined canals and more than 300 km of concrete drainage. Therefore making it not only the largest irrigation scheme in the country, but also in the southern hemisphere.
